July 30 The Big Chute

We were underway again.  The terrain changed as we entered the Severn River.  There were more lakes and less canals.  Lots of rock outcrops and fewer development.  Only and occasional cottage (first pic) poised on a rock outcrop here and there.    After a full day of travel we arrived at Lock 44, the Big Chute.  At this lock, the boat is lowered about more than 50 feet down in the Severn river.  But, you get picked up in a sling on a barge, which is then transported on a railway up over a road and back down to the water.  Pics 2,3,4 show how it works coming from the bottom to the top of the lock.  The fifth pic is from BlueSkies getting ready to load up and the final pic is taken from the helm of the boat as we are being lower down into a rocky gorge below.  And that is where we stayed the night, tied up at the lower end of Big Chute.  Truly remarkable engineering, and what a ride !
